Vintage Motorbike Museum

Museum | Carlisle | England | United Kingdom

The Scaleby Hill Vintage Motor Bike Museum in Carlisle, England, houses an impressive collection of about 70 motorcycles that have been restored by Mike Barry, a former racer. The exhibition includes models from British and foreign manufacturers such as Triumph, Suzuki, Honda, Ducati, and Coventry Eagle. Particularly noteworthy is the oldest exhibit, a 1926 Douglas.

The motorcycles are not only display pieces, but also in working condition, highlighting the authenticity and charm of the museum. In addition to the motorcycles, visitors will also find a variety of memorabilia, including jukeboxes, model motorcycles, large-scale remote-controlled airplanes, as well as railway and automobile memorabilia. Some classic cars, such as a Jaguar sedan and an Austin van, are also part of the collection and are regularly used on the road.

The museum is known for its personal atmosphere, as visitors have the opportunity to talk to Mike Barry about his collection and racing experiences. Several friendly dogs welcome guests and accompany them through the exhibition.

The collection includes motorcycles from the 1920s to the 1960s, with a focus on well-known British and Italian brands. Some of the motorcycles on display are:

- Aermacchi 350: A racing motorcycle equipped with numerous special parts, which placed 2nd in the Scottish 350 Classic Championship.
- BSA 500 Shooting Star: A motorcycle originally delivered in 1959 to the Isle of Man and restored in 2014.
- Honda CB350 K4: A motorcycle successfully used in the Isle of Man and achieved several podium finishes.
- Manx Norton 30M 500: A legendary racing motorcycle that played a central role in motorcycle racing from the 1950s to the 1970s.
- Suzuki T500: A motorcycle used in various racing series in the 1970s and achieved numerous successes.

The Scaleby Hill Vintage Motor Bike Museum not only offers insights into the history of motorcycle manufacturing, but also into the passion and dedication of a former racer who shares his experiences and collection with the public.

I visited the museum as a surprise for my father in 2019. Mike was building a new space to expand the museum, and though it was closed that day, he kindly let us inside and shared stories about all the bikes and cars. Mike and his partner were super kind. I'll definitely come back to visit Mike again, he's a fantastic man. Thank you, Mike, for the time you shared with me and my family years ago

Was driving home from a mid-week break and spotted a sign. Followed the signs and was amazed by the fantastic collection of bikes in a great shed filled with bike stuff and memorabilia. Received a great welcome from Mike and his dogs. Wish I had more time to look around, but I will return next time I pass by
